Call Centers Alter Strategy to Triumph Over Recession

Iowa call center industry is weathering the recession better than other sectors of economy, thanks largely to a major outsourcing trend.

Iowa benefitted throughout the ’80s and ’90s from the spread of call centers. The growth fizzled in the early part of this decade when consumers, upset with the volume of calls, urged lawmakers to create the National Do Not Call Registry, and many large companies sent more of their jobs overseas to lower costs.

It might seem that the recession would have made matters even worse, but it did not.

Infinity Contact in Cedar Rapids has added 50 to 60 employees in the last year. PRC is expanding its 300-employee Cedar Rapids operation, and Iowa City-based TMone expects to add about 50 full-time positions early next year to its current staff of 200 people.
